Since the launch of Apple Vision Pro, we have come across many videos of people purchasing and experiencing it. Some take it for a spin on the streets, while others spend a whole day with it and post about their experiences.  As with every product, people have mixed feelings about it.  While some are saying that we are witnessing the birth of a new technology, others talk about how dystopian and frightening it is. Although the concept may appear unsettling to us, we can’t deny the fact that this technology holds the potential for significant growth in the future.

VR (Virtual Reality) headsets like Meta’s Quest are headsets that immerse users in computer-generated environments, ranging from virtual cinemas and gaming scenarios to 3D video scenes and metaverse virtual worlds. In contrast, AR (Augmented Reality) technology seeks to bring virtual elements into real world for the user. Typically, AR glasses incorporate a display or projector that superimposes images onto the user’s field of vision while preserving their natural perception of the surrounding environment.

The Apple Vision Pro merges Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) technologies, creating what’s known as Mixed Reality (MR). MR seamlessly integrates both the physical and virtual worlds into a unified visual experience. This presents a significant challenge, as aligning the capabilities of digital displays and cameras with the human eye’s visual processing is no easy feat. The absence of real-time depth perception and peripheral vision in MR headsets restricts users’ mobility in the physical world. Because of all these different methods and technologies coming together within this innovation, Vision Pro headsets are much more expensive than VR headsets, which is reasonable for the things it offers to users.

The Apple Vision Pro requires individual customization, featuring an iris log-in function and the ability for users to create personalized avatars through facial scans captured by the headset’s internal sensors. These avatars are exclusive to each user, establishing a unique connection between the Vision Pro and its owner.

Designed primarily for seated use, the Vision Pro issues warnings if users move excessively. Unlike VR headsets, it lacks bundled controllers, instead relying on navigation through eye, hand, and voice gestures. While groundbreaking in its approach, this functionality restricts its appeal for gamers. Nonetheless, Apple’s advancement is something that no other platform or product ever accomplished. This showcases Apple’s capacity in seamlessly integrating these diverse methods into one platform, though it’s noteworthy that Apple is not a specialist in spatial computing.

While boasting ultra-high-resolution displays comparable to 4K TVs, prolonged use of the Vision Pro may lead to eye strain due to the absence of variable depth focusing. Its weight and design may also cause discomfort for users unaccustomed to VR headsets, further limiting extended usage.

Priced at $3499, the Vision Pro presents a significant financial barrier for the general public, as well as educators and students. However, it’s important to acknowledge its role as a pioneering innovation in its field. As technology evolves and becomes more widespread, we can anticipate a potential decrease in the price of devices like the Vision Pro. Moreover, rising demand for immersive educational experiences and increased market competition may drive the development of more affordable alternatives in the future.
